Valley of flowers is a fairy-land situated high in the Himalayas of the Uttarakhand, at an altitude of 3,600 meters above the sea-level, protected by snowy mountains. Unknown to humans, for centuries this is enchanting valley lay frozen during the colder months, and burst into its youthful beauty every year, as the snow melted with the advent of summer The Valley of Flowers National park is located in chamoli Garhwal, about 595km northeast of Delhi in the state of Uttarakhand. Its altitude ranges from 3200m to 6675m. Such a variation in the altitude provides a great diversity of landscape and microhabitats. The national park is bounded by Gauri parvat(6590m) and Ratavan(6125m) in the east, Kunth Khal (4430m) in the west, saptasring (5038m) in the south, and Nilgiri Parvat (6479m) in the North, River Pushpawati,which originates from left bank of Tipra glacier near Bhundar Khal flows down through the VUFand joins Lakshaman Ganga at Ghangaria to form Bhyundar River.This river drains in to Alaknanda, The main potion of the valley runs in the East-West direction along the river Pushpawati .

The most picturesque and species rich medows are located towards higher altitude on South facing slopes of kunth khal and areas above Drunager. The central valley is about 10 km square in area. The elevation of the central meadows is ca3500m. Once explored, the valley of flowers gradually caught the attention of naturalists, researchers, and trekkers from the world over. Prior to 1975 higher Himalayan zone was declared as restricted area. In 1975 this area was opened to visitors. Unfortunately, the unplanned display of this spectacular natural heritage provide disastrous, which affected the plant communities and the sensitive ecosystem adversely. The Valley of flowers with 87.52sq.km area was declared as a National Park on September 6th, 1982. Location And Physical Features the high altitude National Park is situated in the northeast part of Garhwal Himalaya in the Zaskar Range above Ghangria in the upper catchments of the Bhundar Ganga- an eastem tributary of river Alakhnanda. The national park is starts from the timberline beyond Ghangria at an altitude of 3200m. and run in east west direction along both the banks of river puspawati up to snow clad peaks of Rataban (6126m) and Gauri Parvat(6590m). Numerous tiny streams and waterfalls dissect the park. However,Pushpawati is the lone river in the Park. After having emerged out of huge Tipra Glacier, Pushpawati flows right across the Park. After coming out of the park Pushpawati joins Laxman Ganga at Ghangria.frome this confluence, the river takes its name as Bhyundar Ganga,till it the Alaknanda at Govindghat. The major meadows relatively flat, gently undulating landscapes run in the middle of National Park in the east west direction.

The extent of central valley is about 10sq.km. To the north and south of the Central Meadow the slope rise initially gently but gradually rise in steepness to merge with snow clad mountains and rocky scress of Nilgiri Parvat(6479m) in the north and Sapta Sringa(5038m)in the south. The topography of park consist of highly heterogeneous land formations ranging from low lying flat area, genital to steep slopes, unstable glacial moraines. Stream banks, forest meadow edges and snow bound areas. Climate The climate of the area is very humid, with short cool summer and long severe winter. The area becomes snow bound up to 7mounth (late September to early May). The Snow fall begins in October and continues until the first week of April and the valley remains inaccessible until the first week of May as snow melt begin around mid April. The average temperature for May is 9ºc. The daily rainfall fluctuates greatly as it goes up to 47.10mm in mid August and also register no rainfall during the same month. The maximum rainfall occurs in August (405mm).

Trek Itinerary :: Rishikesh to Rishikesh :: As a Private Trek ::
Day 01 : Rishikesh - Joshimath (244 Kms/8-9 Hrs) via dhari devi temple drive to Joshimath :

The journey to Joshimath is a fascinating one, travelling mainly up the Alaknanda valley from Deoprayag onwards a mixture of beautiful countryside and fascinating bustling small towns.You can take stopover for a while at the place called "Devepryag" and Dhari Devi Temple placed on the way to Joshimath.It is significant because of having confluence of the two prime rivers of the Garhwal Himalayas "Bhagirathi" and Alaknanda actually holy river Ganges starts from here. So very, very much to see and experience. As you move higher up, the scenery subtly changes from very lush hillsides, with rice terraces, to slightly more barren mountainous countryside beyond Srinagar.The final few kilometeres of the journey is an incredible hairpin mountain road from the Vishnu Prayag. Upon arrival in Joshimath by late evening checkin to your pre-booked Hotel. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 02 : Joshimath - Govindghat (22 Kms/1 Hrs) - Ghanghari (14 Kms trek/5-6 Hrs) :

Today Set off from Joshimath in the morning to Govind Ghat to start the trek. Basically this is a starting point for the trekking. Track is very well maintained with a number of barriers at the side to prevent falls. There is a gradual ascent along a well maintained pilgrim trail to GHANGHARIA. Upon arrival at Ghangariya check into the hotel. You can have the glimpses of beautiful surroundings in the evening. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 03 : Ghanghari- Vally of Flowers - Ghanghari (5 Kms trek on side/4-5 Hrs) :

Today we start for the Valley of Flowers trek. You can indulge yourself here in the Valley in exploring, photographing and identifying flowers.From Ghangari its another 05 kms trek to valley nearly 10 kms long and almost 02 kms wide. The valley is ringed with snow-capped mountains and watered by streams rising in the mountains, its accessible from late April, but is grandest from late July to the end of August. Literally hundreds of wild flowers bloom in Tread with caution because your visit should not endanger the things you have come to see. Also carry a little salt. The valley is infested with leeches in the wettest weather when the flowers are there best.

Day 04 : Ghanghari - Hemkund - Ghanghari (06 Kms trek on side) :

After an early breakfast, Trek to Hemkund Sahib(4329 meter) above sea level. It is a holy place for the Sikh community. You can see thousands of Sikh Men,women and children are woken in their Gurdwara-shrines in the plains by the thudding of huge drums.They assemble,and led by the yellow flags of their monotheistic faith,start their long and arduous pilgrimage to the 4329 meter-high Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib, on the far side of the great glacial lake of Lokpal.A number of snow covered peaks rise around this austerely beautiful lake.This is quite a steep climb. In the Sikh holy book, The Granth Sahib, the Sikh Guru Gobind Singh recounts that in a previous life, he meditated on the shores of a lake surrounded by seven snowcapped mountains now recognized by Hemkund. Late afternoon trek back to Ghanghari. Dinner & overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 05 : Ghanghari- Govind Ghat (14 Kms trek /5-6 Hrs) - Badrinath (30 Kms/2 Hrs) :

After an early breakfast we trek down to Goving Ghat and proceed to badrinath by road. The drive from Govindh Ghat to Badrinath is another stunning drive over winding mountain roads with superb views it all adds to the sense of adventure.Upon arrival in Badrinath check into your pre-booked hotel. Afternoon Visit Mana Village and Badrinath Temple. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 06 : Badrinath - Rishikesh (300 Kms/ 11 Hrs) :

After an early breakfast drive back to Rishikesh .driving down from Badrinath and then up into Joshimath gives a much better idea of the layout of the whole area and also a chance to take one last look at the mountains. During the journey you get to see different things and get a better feel for it. On way back to Rishikesh you can see the Place called Rudraprayag where the confluence of river Madakini and river Alaknanda take place. Upon arrival in Rishikesh check into the Hotel. Evening can be spent with a walk down along the road where all the Ashrams are situated to see the Temples. Overnight at Hotel.
